Ahh... Halloween, the atmosphere fills my heart with joy. The start of real fall weather, spooky decorations everywhere I go, children getting in the spirit and more! Since it’s starting to get cold outside, it’s common to want to have some comfort food; which people usually think could be seen as junk food. That’s not always the case. This fall, I started doing a Ketogenic diet. This means I am watching the intake of carbs per day and limiting to less than 25 grams of carbs a day. Did you know the average person consumes about 300 grams a day? Small substitutions like using cauliflower rice instead of jasmine rice, almond flour instead of all purpose flour or zoodles (spiral zucchini) instead of pasta, are ways to still maintain the keto diet and enjoy delicious meals.*
I know what you’re thinking, so what does this have to do with Halloween?! Diet candy!? Whether you're doing a keto diet or just looking to eat well, Halloween can be the perfect time to get a little creative and ~sPoOky!~ Here’s a few hacks you can do to help you, your friends, and your kids have fun and eat right at the same time:
Stick to a theme: Instead of having a house full of candy, be creative and have Halloween themed snacks such as; banana ghosts or clementine pumpkins
Make it a reward: Control when you can give out candy; maybe after a race, the winner of a game, whoever cleaned their room the quickest
Show a good example: Be the parents that promote healthy eating, like giving out fruit snacks, fun toys, or low sugar items, your kids will follow along
Walk instead of driving on Halloween: While it might be dangerous to walk the streets in the dark, it's still a good way to exercise without realizing, save gas and burn some calories!
Reusing Halloween decorations: You don't have to throw out the pumpkin guts you carved out, use it as the main ingredient as a "Jack-O-Lantern Soup". Check out our beloved recipe below!
